Description

A cozy one-pan dinner that is cheap, fast, and packed with flavor. This dish features tender cabbage and savory ground beef for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 is great for flavor) (Lean ground beef can also be used.)
  • 1 small to medium head green cabbage, chopped (about 6 to 8 cups) (Napa cabbage works too and cooks faster.)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste (Or 1 cup canned diced tomatoes in a pinch.)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (sweet or smoked)
  • to taste salt and black pepper (Season throughout the cooking process.)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter (Use as needed for cooking.)

Optional Add-Ons

  • to taste red pepper flakes (For added heat.)
  • to taste shredded cheese (Optional topping.)
  • a splash broth (Can be added for moisture.)
  • to taste chopped parsley (For garnish.)

Instructions

Cooking

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as you go.
  2. Add diced onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until it softens. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, paprika, and soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce, adding a good pinch of salt and pepper.
  4. Add the chopped cabbage. It may look like a lot at first, but it cooks down quickly.
  5. Cover and cook for 8 to 12 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes until the cabbage is tender but not mushy.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning. If the mixture looks dry, add a splash of broth or water. Finish with cheese or herbs if desired.

Notes

Leftovers taste even better the next day. Store in a sealed container for up to 4 days or freeze in portions for up to 2 months. Reheat in a skillet with a splash of water or broth.
