Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 12 oz Bowtie pasta
  • 4 cups Marinara sauce
  • 1 lb Ground beef or Italian sausage (optional) (For adding protein)
  • 15 oz Ricotta cheese (Use whole milk for creaminess)
  • 2 cups Shredded mozzarella cheese (Save some for the topping)
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1 Egg (Helps ricotta set)
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 1/4 cup Chopped basil or parsley (Optional for garnish)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Cook the bowtie pasta in salted water for 2 minutes less than the package instructions. Drain and toss with a little marinara sauce.
  3. In a bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the egg, salt, pepper, Parmesan, and Italian seasoning.

Assembly

  1. Spread a layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. Add a layer of bowties, dollop with the ricotta mixture, and sprinkle with mozzarella. Repeat until all ingredients are used.
  3. Finish with a generous layer of mozzarella cheese on top.

Baking

  1. Cover the pan with foil and bake for about 25 to 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden.
  2. Optional: Broil for 1 to 2 minutes for extra browning, watching closely to prevent burning.
  3. Let the dish rest for 10 to 15 minutes before slicing to hold its shape.
