Description

These Hawaiian Ham and Pineapple Skewers are a sweet and savory grilling treat, perfect for summer BBQs and quick appetizers.

Ingredients

For the Skewers

  • 1 lb Ham, cut into 1 to 1.5 inch chunks (Thick sliced ham steak or leftover baked ham works well.)
  • 2 cups Pineapple chunks (Fresh is best, canned works if drained well.)
  • 1 cup Bell peppers (Mix of red and green preferred.)
  • 1 cup Red onion or sweet onion (Red onion recommended as it softens and sweetens on the grill.)
  • 1 cup Optional vegetables (zucchini, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes) (Feel free to add for color and taste.)

For the Marinade

  • 1/3 cup Soy sauce (Use low sodium if desired.)
  • 3 tablespoons Honey (Balances the saltiness of the soy sauce.)
  • 2 cloves Garlic, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon Grated ginger (Or 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger.)
  • 1 tablespoon Oil (Can use vegetable or olive oil.)
  • to taste Squeeze of lime or a pinch of chili flakes (Optional for added flavor.)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Cut ham, pineapple, peppers, and onion into similar sized chunks.
  2. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Thread ingredients onto skewers, alternating colors and textures.
  4. Leave a little space between pieces to allow heat circulation.
  5. For the marinade, whisk together soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, and oil in a bowl.
  6. Brush or toss the skewers with the marinade and let sit for at least 15 minutes.

Grilling

  1. Preheat grill to medium heat and clean/oil grates.
  2. Grill skewers for about 8 to 12 minutes, turning every couple of minutes.
  3. Brush extra marinade during the first half of grilling and stop before the end to prevent burning.
  4. Remove skewers from grill and allow to rest for 2 minutes before serving.

Notes

These skewers can also be baked at 425°F for 10 to 14 minutes on a lined sheet pan, or made in an air fryer at 390°F for 7 to 9 minutes.
