Description
A cozy mashup of cheesy grilled bread and pepperoni pizza that comes together quickly with pantry staples like marinara and mozzarella.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 4 slices sturdy sandwich bread, sourdough, or thick white bread (Choose thick bread to avoid sogginess.)
- 1 cup low moisture shredded mozzarella (Shred your own for better melt.)
- 1/4 cup marinara sauce (Store-bought is fine; less is better to avoid sogginess.)
- 10 slices pepperoni (Regular or turkey pepperoni; omit for vegetarian.)
- 2 tablespoons butter or mayo (For browning the bread.)
Optional Flavor Boosters
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (For added flavor, optional.)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (Optional addition for more flavor.)
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (For a spicy kick, optional.)
- 2 tablespoons grated parmesan (Optional, to mix with mozzarella.)
Instructions
Preparation
- Spread a thin layer of butter or mayo on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on the counter.
- Add a layer of mozzarella, followed by a few pepperoni slices.
- Spoon on a little marinara, but do not overdo it. Optionally, add a pinch of Italian seasoning.
- Top with more mozzarella, then add the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
Cooking
- Warm a skillet over medium-low heat and add the sandwich.
- Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the bottom is golden.
- Flip carefully and cook the other side for another 3 to 5 minutes.
- If browning too fast, lower the heat or cover the pan briefly to help the cheese melt.
Serving
- Let the sandwich rest for about a minute, then slice in half.
- Warm extra marinara for dipping before serving.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet for best results. Avoid excess marinara inside the sandwich to prevent sogginess. Use low moisture mozzarella for optimal texture.
