Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 cans Black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Cumin
- 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon Chili powder
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 teaspoon Black pepper
- 1 large Egg (or flax egg for vegan) (Mix 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons water and let it sit for 5 minutes.)
- 1 cup Bread crumbs or panko (For structure)
- 1/2 cup Rolled oats (optional) (Helpful for firmness)
- 2 tablespoons Tomato paste or BBQ sauce (For richness)
- 2 tablespoons Oil for cooking
Instructions
Preparation
- Drain and rinse the beans, then spread them on a towel or paper towel lined sheet pan. Pat them dry and let them sit for about 10 minutes.
- In a skillet with a little oil, cook the chopped onion until soft, about 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
- In a large bowl, mash about two thirds of the beans with a fork or potato masher. Leave the rest whole to maintain some texture. Stir in the cooked onion and garlic.
- Add the egg (or flax egg), bread crumbs, spices, and tomato paste to the bean mixture. Mix until you can form a patty that holds together.
- Chill the mixture in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes to make shaping easier.
- Shape the mixture into 6 to 8 patties, depending on desired size.
Cooking
- Pan-fry in a little oil over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned and crisp.
- Alternatively, bake at 400°F for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- For air frying, preheat to 375°F and air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway.
- When grilling, ensure the patties are well chilled and oil the grates for best results.
Notes
These burgers can be made ahead and frozen for later. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for 2 to 3 months. Reheat in a skillet or air fryer for the best texture.
