Description
A quick and flavorful Thai basil beef stir fry that can be prepared in about 20 minutes, perfect for weeknight dinners.
Ingredients
For the Stir Fry
- 1 lb Ground beef (Preferably 80/20 or 85/15 for flavor.)
- 1 cup Thai holy basil (Thai basil can be used as a substitute.)
- 4 cloves Garlic (Finely chopped or smashed.)
- 2 pcs Thai chilies (Or any small hot chili, adjust to heat preference.)
For the Sauce
- 1.5 tbsp Oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp Fish sauce
- 1 tbsp Soy sauce
- 1-2 tsp Sugar (Start with 1 tsp and adjust to taste.)
- 2-3 tbsp Water (Just a splash to loosen the sauce.)
For Serving
- 2 cups Jasmine rice (Cooked.)
- 1 ea Fried egg (Optional, for topping.)

Preparation
- Mix the oyster sauce, fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and water in a small bowl to create the sauce mixture.
- Start cooking your jasmine rice if you haven’t done so already.
- Finely chop the garlic and chilies.
Cooking
- Heat a pan or wok over medium-high heat and add a little oil if needed.
- Add garlic and chilies, stirring for 15 to 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Incorporate the ground beef into the pan. Break it up and cook until no longer pink.
- Pour in the sauce mixture and allow it to bubble for 30 to 60 seconds to coat the beef.
- Turn off the heat and add the basil, stirring until it wilts.
Serving
- Serve the stir fry over hot jasmine rice and top with a fried egg if desired.
Notes
Pad Kra Pao can be adapted with different proteins or vegetables as per your preference. Avoid overcooking the beef and ensure basil is added at the end for the best flavor.
