Hawaiian Spam Musubi is a salty, cozy, and quick snack made with rice, Spam, and nori. It’s perfect for meal prep, road trips, or just a satisfying meal at home.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 can Spam, classic (Sliced into rectangles.)
- 2 cups Calrose or sushi style rice (Rinsed until water is mostly clear.)
- 4 sheets Nori sheets (Roasted seaweed.)
Seasoning and Glaze
- 3 tablespoons Soy sauce (For flavor.)
- 2 tablespoons Sugar or honey (Can be adjusted to taste.)
- 1 tablespoon Mirin (Optional, for flavor.)
- 2 tablespoons Water (To help glaze.)
Optional Toppings
- 1 tablespoon Furikake (Optional topping, highly recommended.)
- Cooking oil or nonstick spray (For frying Spam.)
- 1 egg Egg (Make a thin omelet for additional flavor.)
- 1 tablespoon Spicy mayo (Optional, mix mayo with sriracha.)
Instructions
Preparation
- Cook the rice and keep it warm.
- Slice and fry the Spam. Brown for 2-3 minutes on each side.
- In the last minute of frying, add the soy sauce, sugar, optional mirin, and water to create a glaze.
- Cut nori sheets in half.
- Build the stack: place rice on the bottom, followed by Spam, then wrap with nori.
- Let it set seam side down for 2 minutes so the nori sticks.
Assembly Tips
- Optionally use a musubi mold for easier shaping.
- If using no mold, you can shape by hand or use an empty Spam can lined with plastic wrap.
Notes
Spam Musubi is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days. Microwave reheating is recommended for best texture.
